Memory foam vs pocket coil: which should you buy?

The two constructions that make up almost everything sold in Calgary. They fail in different ways and suit different people, and the honest answer for most shoppers is a hybrid of the two.

Buy memory foam if…

  • You sleep on your side and want the shoulder and hip to sink in.
  • You share a bed with someone who gets up at 5 am.
  • You're under about 130 lb and struggle to compress a firmer bed.
  • Budget is the constraint — foam gives you more comfort per dollar at the entry end.

Buy pocket coil if…

  • You sleep hot, or the bedroom is upstairs and south-facing.
  • You sit on the edge of the bed daily and want it to hold.
  • You're over about 230 lb — coils support heavier builds better and longer.
  • You change position often and don't want to feel like you're climbing out of a hole.

Buy a hybrid if you're not sure

Which is most people. A hybrid is a pocket-coil unit with a foam comfort layer on top: the airflow and support of coils, the contouring of foam. It's the construction we sell most of in Calgary, and it's the one that goes wrong for the fewest people.

What actually matters more than either

Firmness matched to your sleeping position. A soft hybrid and a soft foam bed will both work for a side sleeper; a firm version of either will both hurt. Get the firmness right first, then choose the construction that fits how you sleep and where the bedroom is.

Comparison FAQ

Common questions

Which lasts longer, memory foam or pocket coil?

A quality pocket-coil hybrid usually outlasts an all-foam bed — 8 to 10 years against 5 to 7 — because coils don't develop body impressions the way foam does. Latex beats both.

Which is better for back pain?

Neither construction wins on its own; firmness matched to your sleeping position does. That said, back sleepers with lumbar pain tend to do better on a medium-firm hybrid, because the coil unit holds the hips up while the foam layer fills the lumbar curve.

Does memory foam sleep hot?

Older memory foam did. Gel infusions, open-cell structures and perforated layers have narrowed the gap a lot, but a coil unit still moves air better by design. If you sleep genuinely hot, buy a hybrid.

Which is better if we have different bedtimes?

Memory foam, clearly. It absorbs movement almost completely. A pocket-coil hybrid is close behind — it's the older continuous-coil beds that transmit every turn.
