Canadian mattress sizes and dimensions
Every standard size sold in Canada, in inches and centimetres, plus how much floor space each one actually needs. Measure the room before you fall in love with a King.

How to measure your room properly
Mark the mattress footprint on the floor with painter's tape before you buy. It takes two minutes and it settles the argument. Then check three things people forget:
- Door swing. A bedroom door or a wardrobe door that opens inward needs about 90 cm of clearance, not 60.
- The route in. Narrowest doorway, stairwell turn, ceiling height above the stairs. Mattresses flex; box springs do not. This catches people constantly in the older walk-ups around Renfrew, Bridgeland and Crescent Heights.
- Headboard depth. An upholstered headboard adds 8–12 cm to the total length of the bed against the wall.
Bed frame sizes are not mattress sizes
A frame is typically 5 to 15 cm larger than the mattress it holds, depending on the rail and the headboard. Buy the mattress first, then match the frame to it — not the other way round.
Split king, and why couples end up there
Two Twin XL mattresses side by side measure 78" × 80" — an inch wider than a King. Each side can be a different firmness, and on a split adjustable base each side moves independently. If the two of you are more than two points apart on the firmness scale, this solves a problem that no single mattress can.
Common questions
Is a Canadian queen the same as an American queen?
Yes — 60 by 80 inches in both countries. UK and European sizes are different, so imported bedding often won't fit properly.
What's the difference between a double and a full?
Nothing. They're two names for the same 54 by 75 inch mattress. Older Canadian retailers say double; newer ones say full.
King or California King?
A King is wider at 76 inches; a California King is narrower at 72 inches but four inches longer. Pick Cal King only if height is the problem — otherwise King gives you more usable space.
How much room do I need around the bed?
At least 60 cm of walking space on each side you use, and 90 cm if a door or wardrobe opens into it. A King realistically needs a 12-foot wall.
